NUCLEUS-control center of cell. Cells cannot survive w/o a nucleus.

CYTOPLASM- watery material lying within the cell between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Many of the substances involved in cell metbolism are dissolved in the cytoplasm. It also contains a variety of organelles that have specific functions

GOLGI BODIES- stacks of flattened membrane sacs. They serve as processing, packaging, and storage centers for the products released from the cell. Animal cells usually have only one golgi body, near the nucleus. Plant cells may have several hundred golgi bodies.

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM-System of fluid filled canals or channels enclosed by membranes. It forms a continuous network throughout the cytoplasm. It also serves as a path for the transport of materials throughout the cell.

NUCLEOLI-Dense granular bodies that disappear at the beginning of cell division and reappear at the end. They are made up of DNA, RNA, and proteins. They are the sites of production of ribosomes.

CENTRIOLES- Located near the nucleus i animal cells is a pair of cylindrical centrioles that lie at right angles to eachother. They are also found in the moving cells of algae, fungi, and higher plants.

CHLOROPLAST- contain the green pigment chlorophyll. The chloroplast is the site of photosynthesis, the food making process that uses light energy.
