Living Cells; Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells*

Living cells are classfied into two types. Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells.

  • prokaryotic means that the structure is single celled.
  • There is no nucleus and genetic material is said to float around in the cytoplasm. They lack all organelles expect ribosomes and cell walls. The ribosomes are smaller and the cell wall is not made of cellulose as a normal cells is.
  • eukaryotic means true nucleus.

  • eukaryotic cells are structurally & biochemically more complex than prokaryotic cells and they are considered to represent a later stage of evolution of the cell. eukaryotics have a higher degree of organization and contain more organelles than a prokaryotic cell.
